As worshippers congregated on Friday, a bomb rocked the Kano Central Mosque.

“Two bombs exploded, one after the other, in the premises of the Grand Mosque seconds after the prayers had started,” Aminu Abdullahi, an eyewitness, said, noting that a third bomb also went off nearby.

The Emir, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, was reportedly inside the mosque when the explosions went off in a courtyard outdoors, and there wasn't any immediate report on casualty figures.

According to witnesses like Abdullahi, the police began shooting in the kamikaze aftermath as worshippers scampered for safety.

It will be remembered that at Kano's grand mosque, last week, Emir Sanusi charged northerners to take up arms to defend themselves against the Boko Haram sect, and he expressed his doubt in the ability of Nigeria's military to protect the citizens and halt insurgency.

The Emir of Kano is highly influential in Nigeria generally, and in the North especially. He is the number two cleric, second after the Sultan of Sokoto.

An attack with Sanusi as the target could result in upheaval in Kano, Nigeria's second largest city and the most populated in the North.
