A prisoner in Katsina state has been charged to court for trying to kill himself.
Abubakar Mustapha, accused of being a member of a gang of thieves in Dutsin-ma town, is on trial for trying to commit suicide while in police detention, an offence the police say is contrary to Section 231 of the Penal Code.
The middle aged man is also facing charges bordering on alleged disturbance of public peace under Section 113 of the Penal Code; mischief, under Section 327 of the Penal Code and belonging to unlawful society under Section 97B of the Penal Code.
He was arrested at the local government area secretariat while attempting to “trespass” into the chairman’s office.
He was also accused of damaging the chairman’s official vehicle.
