During an immunisation exercise conducted in Kaduna State on the 11th of November, 2013, a total of 5.1 million people were reportedly immunised against cerebro spinal meningitis according to an official Primary Health Care Agency.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), that figure as stated by Alhaji Hamza Ikara, the Health Education Officer of the agency, represents over 90 per cent of the targeted population and is confident that the state will not witness any more outbreaks in the coming years.

Unfortunately, the state could not achieve a more preferable rate of 100 per cent due to the shortage of vaccines necessary and also the initial resistance by some beneficiaries to the medication given. The mobilisation of youths of the ages 16 to 29 years of age also had to be mobilised to the vaccination point due to their absence in the first three days of the exercise.
