The Super Eagles squad has been depleted, following the withdrawal of Emmanuel Emenike and Kenneth Omeruo from next week’s friendly game against South Africa.
Emenike pulled out of the squad, after just completing a move to Turkish side,Fenerbahce, and would want to settle into his new team, especially with the UEFA Champions League qualifiers coming up against Arsenal.
While Omeruo is understood to be nursing an injury, and will not be available for the game.
Explaining the situation Super Eagles Media Officer, Ben Alaiya quoted the Team’s Administrator, Dayo Enebi Achor, as saying: “He may have been at the club before but he is highly valued in Turkey and he has requested that he be allowed to settle well at the club and the technical crew has obliged him”, Achor said.
Two South African based players Free State Stars, Gege Soriola and Chippa United James Okwuosa have been called up to the squad for the game next week.
Defending why he drafted two defenders for the game,Keshi said: “We also need to start grooming new defenders who are promising for upcoming challenges and we found the two players invited thus far very promising,” said the Super Eagles coach.
He however understood why Emenike had to pull out of the team:“We will need him in the World Cup qualifiers but he has a lot of things to do at his new club and we must give him that opportunity. But I must say we are in good contact and we are happy with the way things are going with our top players in the transfer market.”
Meanwhile, six players have pulled out from the South African squad,in order to prepare for the CAF Champions League fixture of Orlando Pirates, next weekend.
