The Kwara state police command has arrested nine suspects for allegedly holding Indian hemp festival in Ilorin, Kwara State.

According to Tribune Online, the arrested persons were of secondary school age.

It was gathered that the suspects had circulated posters informing members of the public about the event, just as calls by prominent citizens and organisations to call off the event were rebuffed.

Police sources at the Adewole Divisional Police station, Ilorin who confirmed the development, said that the culprits were rounded up at Aiyetoro community, Asa-Dam area in Ilorin over the weekend.

The source also said that the suspects would soon be charged to court as soon as the police command completed its investigations on the alleged involvement of individuals in the act.

When contacted, the state police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ajayi Okasanmi, confirmed the incident, saying that, “I just received the report and I cannot confirm the number of those that were arrested.”

“The incident happened under the jurisdiction of the ‘D’ Division under Adewole Divisional Police station, Ilorin.”

Okasanmi also said that the police command would intensify efforts at ensuring crime prevention and peaceful atmosphere in the state.
