Nigeria- A Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday sentenced a 43-year-old apprentice, Abayomi Odunuga, to five years imprisonment with hard labour for drug peddling.

Odunuga, had earlier pleaded guilty to a one-count charge of dealing in Cannabis Sativa, also known as Indian hemp.

He was arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on April 12, 2012, at his residence and was arraigned on Oct. 31.

The Prosecutor, Mr Kalu Orji, had told the court that the NDLEA recovered 8.5kg of Indian hemp from Odunuga’s house during his arrest.

The substance was concealed in a white flour sack, according to Orji.

Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia said that the sentence shall begin from the date Odunuga was arrested and adjourned the case for review of the facts of the case and sentencing.

Odunuga had, since August last year, been in the Ikoyi Prison custody where he was remanded by a vacation judge.

When the Federal High Court resumed from vacation last year, the case was transferred to Justice Binta Murtala- Nyako.

Murtala-Nyako was eventually transferred, and the case assigned to Ofili-Ajumogobia.
