There was mild drama at an Igbosere Magistrate Court in Lagos on Tuesday as an accused man defecated in the dock.
18 year-old Bernard Avekpon, was arraigned with 22 others on a three- count charge of conspiracy, unlawful possession of harmful objects and conduct likely to cause breach of peace.
Before proceedings began, the 18 year-old was on the floor, rolling and holding his stomach. He needs to use the loo, he told the Investigating Police Officer (IPO).
The IPO denied his request, saying the case was about to be called, and that if he took Avekpon to the restroom, there would be no one to secure other defendants. Hold it in, he reportedly said.
However, as soon as he entered the dock with other defendants, Avekpon relieved himself and a foul smell filled the courtroom.
Holding their noses, some people walked out of the courtroom and a counsel enquired about the source of the odour.
Avekpon owned up, saying “I shit.”
He was led outside the courtroom and the arraignment of other defendants continued.
