As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to commemorate the International Dance Day, a neurosurgeon, Dr Biodun Ogunbo, has called for more indulgence in the act to reduce sudden deaths.

Ogunbo told newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday that dance was one of the easiest forms of exercise and of great benefit to the body.

According to him, most sudden death syndromes like stroke, hypertension and heart attacks can be avoided by indulging in dance.

The neurosurgeon cautioned Nigerians against sedentary lifestyle, saying the body needs to be on the move.

"People need to know that heart attacks, stroke, hypertension are on the increase, exercise and active bodily movement like dance need to be practised. Doctors recommend not less than 30 minutes of bodily movement, you can go for walks, you can even go for jogging, or even dancing.

"Dancing is even better for the family because it is so much fun, and you can dance to your own language, your own form of music, and it is so relaxing."

Ogunbo advised Nigerians on the need to eat right, saying consuming less carbohydrate, fatty foods and more of fibre-rich foods like fruits and vegetables was of great benefit.

The International Dance Day was founded in 1982 to promote the art of dance around the world. The day also seeks to emphasize the benefits of dance to the human body.
