The ongoing National Conference is certainly the most controversial gathering in Nigeria. When delegates are not playing scrabble, sleeping, fighting over religion or complaining about insufficient lunch; they are making bold and sometimes ludicrous statements.
On Wednesday, Prof. Akin Oyebode, a retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, delegate representing Ekiti State in the Conference, said that Nigeria should be renamed 'United States of Songhai' just like Kwame Nkruma changed the former Gold Coast to Ghana.
Oyebode said,"I propose that we change the name of Nigeria to United States of Songhai just like Nkruma changed Gold Coast to Ghana".
Speaking further he urged the national conference to consider the issue of fiscal federalism, true federalism, resource control or self determination. He also blasted Nigerian leaders for starving the Nigerian military of funds and denying them arms and ammunition.
