Barely 24 hours after the horrendous bombing that lay waste to Nyanya motor park in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, and only a few hours after the BBC reported that gunmen allegedly broke into a school in Borno state and abducted 200 female students, we read that the president of the country, Goodluck Jonathan was in Kano, a key North-western State, for a PDP rally.

There, the president rallied his PDP team mates and welcomed the former governor of the state, Ibrahim Shekarau, into the PDP fold.

The President was especially feisty when he used the opportunity afforded by the occasion to attack the incumbent governor of Kano state, Rabiu Kwankwaso, who had two days ago stated that he regretted voting for President Jonathan and would not welcome him when he visits.

President Jonathan refuted his claim, declaring that Kwankwaso hadn’t voted for him in 2011. In fact, he noted, in the PDP primary convention, Kwankwaso had “walked out of the [PDP] convention.”

Spokesman for the president, Reuben Abati, says that a “massive” and “jubilant“crowd showed up to welcome he president. His words from Twitter: “A memorable day in Kano today, people on the streets hailing President Jonathan, crowd stretching all the way towards the airport. Amazing!”

After visiting Ibadan, the president then proceeded to Ibadan where he was supposed to visit yesterday before the blast. There, he paid homage to the Olubadan of Ibadan who clocked 100 years yesterday.

Reuben Abati tweeted photos from the rally below:
