Low Quality Education in Nigeria Caused by Infrastructural Decay: Expert

DR. Felix Oragwu, a former university lecturer and author at a public forum said the lack of infrastructure and learning equipment is the cause of Nigerian universities ranking low amongst other institutions in the world.

According to him, Nigerian universities used to rank among the top universities in the world between 1960 and 1970 but by 2009, the universities are struggling to be within the first 1000 in the world. This has affected the quality of graduates produced and their achievements.

He stated that countries in Africa like Ghana and South Africa were also among the first 20 in the world at some point and he said that the downfall of African universities is a worrisome trend.

He also noted that the publications and inventions coming from these universities are affected by the low infrastructure.

He emphasised that attention should be placed on development of technical and entrepreneurial colleges saying that technicians and entrepreneurs important for the running of the economy.
