Malawian President, Joyce Banda has annulled her country's general election citing voting irregularities as the reason for her action.

The Malawian election was allegedly marred by chaos.

Although vote count is still on, Banda's rival candidate, Peter Mutharika has taken a lead of 42%, with 30% of votes counted. Banda Is in second place with 23%.

According to BBC, Banda said a new vote should be held within 90 days but she would not be contesting in the fresh polls.

"I am nullifying the elections, using the powers invested in me by the Malawi constitution," Ms Banda told a news conference.I want to give Malawians an opportunity to choose a candidate of their choice in a free and fair manner. When elections are to be held again, I will be stepping aside", Banda said.

However, Maxon Mbendera, Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) is standing by the poll result saying that despite the challenges the poll remained valid and counting will continue.
