No fewer than 24 people have been killed in flash floods following torrential rains in Mali's capital, Bamako, the government says.

BBC News reports that, some minibus taxis full of passengers were swept away by the floods. Several other were killed when their mud houses collapsed.

Bamako is renowned for massive flooding during the rainy season but city officials claims this is the worst case for several years.
