A Grade One Area Court in Kuje in the FCT, on Monday sentenced a 27-year-old labourer, Aliyu Usman, to three months’ imprisonment for attempting to commit an offence and for criminal trespass.

The Presiding Judge, Mr Nuhu Ibrahim, judged him guilty as charged and sentenced him to three months' imprisonment with an option to pay N30,000 fine.

``The accused person pleaded guilty of entering a church building and pretending to be a member of the church and was found with dangerous weapon; he is hereby convicted of committing the offence.

``You have the option to pay N30,000 fine or face three months in prison,’’ he said.

The police prosecutor, Cpl. Samuel Ocheche, told the court that Mr Imo Efefia of Rock of Ages Mission Church, Kuje, reported the case at the Kuje Police Station on Dec. 24.

He said that Usman, the convict entered the complainants’ church, pretending to be a member.

When he was searched, a sharp cutlass was found on him and he could not give satisfactory identification of himself when questioned.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened the provisions of sections 348, 183 and 95 of the Penal Code.

The convict, who pleaded guilty to the allegations levelled against him, asked for leniency, saying that he never had the intention to commit any offence.
