A Federal High Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti on Monday sentenced 26-year-old Ayodeji Ogunsanya to one year in prison for dealing in 1.5 kilogrammes of Indian hemp.

The Presiding Judge, Justice Adamu Hobon, gave the sentence without an option of fine, adding that the sentence “will run from the very day he was arrested.”

Mr Iliya Waji, the Counsel to the National Drug Laws Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) earlier said the convict was caught with 1.5 kilogrammes of Indian hemp on June 25 at Oke-Ila area of Ado-Ekiti and was promptly arrested.

He presented a bulk of the unanalysed substance and the confessional statement made by the accused to the court.

He also presented the certificate of test analysis, a request for Scientific X-ray and a drug analysis report, which he said confirmed the substance to be Indian hemp.

The convict, who pleaded guilty to the charges, was not represented by any counsel, but prayed for leniency.
