An Oyo State High Court sitting in Ibadan on Wednesday sentenced a 65-year-old man, Ganiyu Akindele, to death by hanging for killing his wife, reports PMNEWS.
According to Mr. Kayode Babalola, the prosecuting counsel, the defendant on 29 August, 2006, during an argument had attacked Funke, his late wife with a machete, severed her arm and also inflicted head wounds on her at their farm located at Laguma village near Oyo town.
He said the duo often quarrel with the convict sometimes threatening to kill the mother of three.
Babalola said that the offence contravened section 319 of the Criminal Code Cap 38 Vol. II Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria, 2000.
Akindele initially pleaded “not guilty,” but later changed his plea to “guilty.”
The defence counsel, O.L. Omoloye, said he left the decision to the discretion of the court.
Justice A. A. Gbolagunte said the evidence was overwhelming to prove the defendant guilty and promptly sentenced him to death by hanging.
