Andy Murray beat Novak Djokovic for only the second time in 14 matches since the 2013 Wimbledon final to win his first Rome Masters title – a fractious, fascinating affair – and heads for Paris with every hope of creating more history in the French Open.

Murray becomes the first British player since George Patrick prevailed over the French legend, Henri Cochet in a quick 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 to win it in 1931.

Just one week ago, Djokovic defeated Murray in the final of the Madrid Masters, but Murray’s victory will come as a boost to him seven days before the French Open.

Djokovic praised the 29-year-old: “Well done, Andy. You did a great job today. You were just too good.”
