Say what you will about the President, the president would not be called a drunk, and he has come out to tell everyone precisely that. The president has expressly denied all the rumors flying around that his illness in UK was as a result of his overdrinking at the party thrown to mark his 56th birthday.

One should probably also remove images of an outrageous bash with booze flowing abundantly from our minds, as President Goodluck Jonathan has said on Saturday that his birthday wasn’t all that – in fact, it was a very quiet affair, and he says he even spent most of his birthday airborne, since he had to make the trip from Abuja to London. The rest of the day, the president says, was spent in his hotel room where he enjoyed the privacy.

He said all this through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati.

It’s not even a laughing matter – the president is apparently really angry with the media for spreading those stories. He said that he has a right to sue the section of the media for disseminating such wrong information. He said what they had done was tantamount to libel and willful defamation of the character of the president, a president who, in his words, has “courageously stepped forward to serve his country.”

SaharaReporters had subtly hinted previously that the president may have become indisposed as a result of the ‘heavy party’ which was thrown to mark his 56th birthday. The president described SaharaReporters’ report as “Fictional nonsense.”

He expressed appreciation to true sympathizers and people who expressed solidarity while he was indisposed.

The president informed the media that incidentally, he fell ill while pursuing plans to bring in greater investments into the country, and thus grow the country’s economy – which is in line with his transformation agenda.
