NAN News - The National Agency for Foods, Drugs, Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Thursday destroyed fake drugs and other regulated products worth N210.76 million seized from states in the South-South zone.
The Director-General, NAFDAC, Dr Paul Orhi, who was represented by the NAFDAC Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Mr Macdonald Garba, performed the exercise in Odukpani, near Calabar.
According to him, the exercise is aimed at eliminating counterfeit products in the country.
"This is in line with our strategy aimed at eliminating the re-introduction of fake and other spurious regulated products into circulation in Nigeria," he said.
Orhi said that the management had adopted a holistic stand on zero tolerance to counterfeit drugs.
He further said that the various multifaceted, diverse and well coordinated strategy employed by the agency were already yielding positive results.
"I am humbled to say that our efforts are yielding tremendous results because there is a significant drop in the percentage of fake and counterfeit medicines in circulation."
"The products being destroyed today are substandard, counterfeit, spurious and fake medicines, food and other regulated products seized by various establishments in the South-South region," he said.
The director-general called for the support of members of the public in the fight against counterfeit products, adding that NAFDAC would continue to sustain the struggle.
He warned those involved in counterfeit products to "have a rethink and change their evil ways for the betterment of our society".
"NAFDAC will sustain the fight against unrepentant individuals and we will definitely catch up with them, " he said.
He advised members of the public to always ensure that drugs had NAFDAC registration numbers before being purchased.
The South-South Zonal Coordinator of NAFDAC, Mr Benson Kine, said that the counterfeit products destroyed included food, drugs, medical devices, chemicals, packaged water and cosmetics.
Kine said that the products were seized during NAFDAC’s routine regulatory activities within the zone, which included Cross River, Rivers, Delta, Edo, Bayelsa.
He said some of them were fake, expired and unwholesome products donated by some organisations to the Association of Community Pharmacists and Ministry of Health.
Stakeholders that witnessed the exercise included representatives of the police, customs, Ministry of Health and civil defence corps
