The National Association of Telecoms Subscribers (NATCOMS) has demanded that telecommunications networks across the nation pay a compensation of N595 billion to the 119 million network subscribers in the country, as recompense for twelve years of poor network service.
NATCOMS issued a letter of protest, asking the telecoms providers to pay each subscriber N5,000. The figure, if paid to each of the 119 million subscribers, will total N595 billion. This was in a letter addressed to the Association of Licensed Telecoms Companies of Nigeria (ALTON) and dated August 2nd, 2013.
NATCOMS president, Mr. Deolu Ogunbanjo said that the compensation could be in the form of recharge cards to the subscribers for twelve years of poor service delivery.
Ogunbanjo defended the demanded by saying that when GSM was introduced to the country in August 2001, network operators gave their subscribers N6,000 free airtime to call any networks. According to Ogunbanjo, if they could do that then, surely they can pay N5,000 to each subscriber in apology for 12 long years of poor service quality.
