The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) during the weekend closed the bonded warehouses of the two major cargo handling companies, the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company Plc (NAHCo) and the Skyway Aviation Handling Company Limited (SAHCOL), at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Lagos and stopped activities of clearing agents after the later attacked customs official, when they came to inspect the bulk breaking unit of the bonded warehouse owned by NAHCo. ThisDay reports.

The Comptroller of Customs, Murtala Muhammed Airport Command (MMAC), Tajudin Olarenwaju, on Tuesday in Lagos said that the warehouses would not be opened and the clearing agents would not come back to the airport until proper measures are taken by terminal operators to prevent possible security breach at the cargo section of the airport.

Olarenwaju said customs decided to suspend cargo clearing activities, except for perishables, medicaments and diplomatic goods because the terminal operators which include handling companies, allowed unauthorised crowd in to restricted areas of the cargo section and the on-conducive environment for collection of government revenue in line with customs import procedure.

He also said the grouse of customs include the fact that the terminal operators had been unable to provide required logistics for trade facilitation, compliance and protection of national security during the clearance process.
