Prof. David Adewumi, President, Nigeria Computer Society (NCS), on Monday while speaking with newsmen said that although electronic voting (e-voting) was the best method for the electoral process in Nigeria, the country was, however, not ready for it now.

He advised the INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, to start preparing Nigerians and the country for the adoption of electronic voting, after the 2015 general elections.

"The country is not ready for e-voting for now but could be prepared for it. Our infrastructure is not sufficient and already, the 2015 general elections are around the corner, so it is too late to use e-voting at this stage.

"However, there should be massive capacity building both at the operational level and by the citizenry and the government.

"Prof. Jega should start capacity building and preparing the minds of the Nigerian voters and this should start at the next period possibly after the 2015 elections,'' the NCS president said.

He said that one of the advantages of e-voting were that it could ensure that election results were made available on the same day the voting was done.

Adewumi added that such a method would reduce tampering with votes, as well as rigging, adding that everything would be done online.

"In the NCS, we use e-voting for all our elections, it is a simple method.

"It is the best thing that could happen for the country because as long as people vote, the results will always come out,'' he said.
