The National Coordinator, National Malaria Control Programme, Dr Nnena Ezeigwe has said that
new malaria vaccine presently developed and verified in the United States could save Nigeria over N480 billion, which its citizens spend annually to treat malaria.
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) revealed that about 300,000 annual malaria deaths especially among children under five years of age, could be prevented when the vaccine hits the Nigerian market.
Furthermore, the vaccine will now be tested in clinical experiments in Africa, starting at the Ifakara Health Institute in Tanzania. And if successful, the vaccine may be approved in four years time.
