A reproductive health organisation of the name Ipas Nigeria, has appealed to the National Assembly to pass into law the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) bill. The VAPP bill is currently awaiting the second reading in the Senate.

This call to recognise a relevant issue in the Nigerian society was made by the Senior Policy Advisor of the organisation, Ms Hauwa Shekarau at a Reproductive Health Cluster meeting in Abuja.

The VAPP, a bill which passed into law could have the power to eradicate violence against persons in public and private spaces, could usher in a turning point in a society like Nigeria which still sees an increase in violence against women and girls without such persecuted parties having the power to fight back with the law.

Calling to notice the rate of assault and molestation against women and children, Ms Hauwa Shekarau said that in the past three years, not less than 3,800 rape cases were reported in the media.

Many more remain unreported. (NAN)
