Cement Producers in Nigeria have rejected the accusations that the poor quality of their products is responsible for the increasing number of collapsed buildings in the country.

The Association of Cement Producers (which comprises Lafarge Cement Wapco, Ashaka Cement, Northern Cement Company of Nigeria and United Cement Company Plc) refuted the statement, insisting that attention should be rather directed at the construction practices employed.

The association insists that the cement quality in Nigeria employs new technology and complies with international standard, and that there are regulatory bodies which ensure that product quality is always ‘top-notch.’

Country Director of Lafarge Cement Wapco Plc, Guillame Roux, said that there were no substandard cement products in Nigeria. Mr. Roux said this to Channels TV on Friday.

“There is no such thing as substandard cement in Nigeria. What we discussed earlier is that there is a need to bring different solutions for different applications and each of those solutions has very high level of quality control standards and this, for us, is critical to continue to help the environment to have good cement. Education of block makers, education of construction and education of mixing is absolutely essential to raise the quality of the construction at the level of the quality of the cement which is very good in Nigeria because the Nigerian cement industry is at a very good level,” Roux said.

Too many buildings have been collapsing, more than people are comfortable with, with most of the collapses happening in Lagos, and builders had begun to point fingers of accusation at cement manufacturers.
