Dr Akinwumi Adesina, Nigeria’s Minister for Agriculture has been named Forbes African Person of the Year, an award he received for his commendable reforms in Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

Akinwumi’s award is especially commendable because he trumped Aliko Dangote (Dangote Group), Jim Ovia (Zenith Bank Group), Strive Masiyiwa (Global Telecoms group) and Patrice Motsepe (South African mining magnate) to become Africa’s Person of the year.

So far, the reform Adesina has set rolling in Nigeria has empowered about 6million farmers in Nigeria, and farmers are beginning to embrace modern agricultural practices.

Adesina is passionate about African farmers, and believes that there is much to be done once the potential of African farmers is tapped into. He believes that agriculture is the key to wealth creation and poverty reduction in Africa.

Expressing his happiness at being awarded the Forbes African Person of the Year award, Adesina said: “I am truly honoured and humbled by this prestigious award, which I dedicate to Africa’s farmers and the new cadre of young business entrepreneurs who have discovered the hidden gem for sustainable wealth creation on our continent – Agriculture.”
