Nigeria- Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, the Minister of Education, while imploring higher educational institutions Africa to take science and technological research seriously, has disclosed that the federal government has released N70m for the Pan African University (PAU) project.

Speaking at a meeting of ECOWAS Ministers in charge of Higher Education on Wednesday in Abuja, Shekarau lamented the "persistent poor record-keeping and reporting culture, inadequate functional ICT infrastructure, manpower and uncoordinated data management at all levels" in the institutions.

``Research collaboration, continental and sub-regional quality rating and monitoring of institutions are still low.

“We lack standardisation and development of non-formal technical and vocational education and training,’’ he said.

He also tasked the ministers to, among other things, discuss the Pan African University (PAU) project, especially the nomination of persons for the post of President and Vice President of PAU’s council.

The minister said that the Federal Government had released the sum of N70 million to the institute to supplement its operational costs.

``Nigeria has also approved the release of N250 million being its seed money granted to the institution for the building of an administrative block, classrooms, lecture theatre and hostels.

``It is disheartening to note that very often, member states do not respond to issues as expected.

``For instance, the West African sub-region is yet to conclude on the names of persons to be forwarded to African Union Commission (AUC) for the post of President and Vice President of PAU.’’
