Nigeria Awaits Ebola Free Certification from WHO

Nigeria, Africa’s biggest economy, is awaiting World Health Organisation (WHO) certification as an Ebola-free nation following the country’s successful containment of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), Business Day reports.

“By WHO protocols, Nigeria cannot be declared Ebola-free till 42 days after the discharge of the last patient and that will be 20th October 2014,” Dan Nwomeh, special assistant, media and communication, to the minister of health said.

With the Federal Government, through the Treatment Research Group on EVD, set to meet with stakeholders in the health sector tomorrow in Abuja to review current national efforts, available resources, and develop a road-map for research on Ebola, industry experts have tasked the government to increase funding for research.

Godswill Okara, national president, Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN), said the salient lesson from the successful containment of EVD was that Nigerian health professionals could perform effectively if given the necessary resources to work
