Nigeria on Tuesday commemorated its 53rdIndependence anniversary at the UN Headquarters in New York and used the opportunity to seek support for its bid for a non-permanent seat of the Security Council.

The News Agency of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the occasion witnessed the presence of many diplomats from various countries and senior foreign government officials.

“Nigeria’s bid for a seat on the Security Council is driven by a deep-seated sense of duty and humility to contribute to international peace and security through renewed thinking on avenues for the prevention of conflict on our planet.” Nigeria’s representative at the UN, Joy Ogwu told the audience.

“We are confronted by a plethora of conflicts, especially, though not exclusively in Africa.” She said, adding that from year to year, Nigeria had advanced and implemented various solutions with unsatisfactory results as many of the conflicts had proved resilient to the best of the nation’s efforts.

She said that the nation’s renewed mandate must increasingly reflect and be based on the foundational aspiration of the UN.

“To this effect, the focus of Nigeria’s participation in the Security Council, with your kind support, would be preventive diplomacy for peace and development.

“If, indeed, the usual publicity and pageantry has not accompanied our campaign, it is due to the pensiveness forced on us by the current global political environment,’’ Ogwu said.

She, however, said that this consideration underscored Nigeria’s humility in the face of the sheer enormity of the task ahead.

“Together, we can rededicate ourselves to the pursuit of some of the key fundamental principles that underpin the very creation of the UN.

“Your support gives us courage, and your presence here tonight boosts our confidence that we can attain these heights,’’ the envoy said. (NAN)
