Ms. Ade Mamonyane Lekoetje ,outgoing Country Director United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Nigeria, has said in spite of the country’s economic diversification , Nigeria’s growth is largely dependent on the Niger Delta , which is the backbone and custodian of the over 80 per cent natural resources needed for the development of both the local and regional economies.

According to Leadership, Lekoetje said this at a farewell party organised by the ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, in her honor.

She posited, “For me and for most Nigerians, Niger Delta is a very important region because they are the goose that lays the golden eggs. And if the goose and the eggs laid are not taken care of, Nigeria will not be what it aspires to be.”

Calling on the Ministry of Niger Delta to accord her successor, Mr. Banardo Cocco, all the necessary support, she appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to promote national unity by working towards conducting free, fair and transparent elections in 2015.

In response, Elder Godsday Orubebe, minister of Niger Delta Affairs said he was optimistic that the 2015 elections would be devoid of crisis as the ‘one man, one vote’ slogan would count.
