The former Nigeria internationals secured only one win in the group stages – 3-2 against China – and lost the other two matches – 1-2 against Italy and 0-3 against Brazil.

By finishing 3rd in the group with 3 points, the Nigerian side made it to the quarterfinals as one of the two best losers with Germany, who amassed four points in their group, C.

Nigeria, captained by Austin ‘jay-jay’ Okocha, went on to face the legends of Spain in the last eight and were thrashed 8-1 at the O2 Arena.

Nigeria’s only goal was scored by Yakubu Aiyegbeni, while Spain’s Lucho Garcia, Mitchel Salgado, Alfonso Perez Munoz scored goals to sink the former Eagles.

After the quarter final matches on Saturday, the twelve teams that began the tournament have been reduced to four.

It was Spain, France, Brazil and Denmark that have made it to the semifinals.

While Spain will take on France on Sunday, Brazil will play Denmark. The third place playoff will hold about an hour after – and be immediately followed by the final of the tournament.
