Sports Nigeria to play remaining Nations Cup qualifiers in Abuja

The National Sports Commission(NSC) have announced that the Super Eagles will play the remaining games of their Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers at the 60,000 capacity National Stadium in Abuja.

After seeing DR Congo defeat Nigeria in a badly managed UJ Esuene stadium in Calabar, the Nigeria football federation (NFF)has informed the Confederations of African Football, (CAF) that the Abuja stadium will host the rest of the Eagles Afcon qualifiers.

The Abuja stadium was newly re-grassed last year after the pitch was overtaken by weeds.

But the NFF are not comfortable with the order as they feel that the cost of executing matches in Abuja will be too weighty on them and also fears that fans might not come out in large numbers to cheer the Super Eagles.

While in Calabar, the Cross River state government helps them out with so many logistics and also fans troop out en-masse.

Undaunted by the directive of the NSC, the Cross Rivers State government has begun the process of getting the stadium back to shape even as the NFF tries to convince the NSC to allow the Super Eagles to play Sudan in Calabar in October.
