Anti-tobacco advocates are certain that the Nigeria Tobacco Control Bill, which is presently before the National Assembly, would be passed before December this year. Especially now that President Goodluck Jonathan has also shown interest in signing the bill into law.

Akinbode Oluwafemi of Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria, said at a forum in Lagos that the bill was not aimed at putting tobacco sellers out of business but rather to regulate the tobacco industry in order to protect the health of Nigerians.

More so, Gbenga Adejuwon, Secretary, Nigeria Tobacco Control Alliance, said that the lapse of the last tobacco control bill would not be repeated.

A 2012 Tobacco Atlas study showed that at least two per cent of all deaths of men in Nigeria are related to tobacco use.
