Ahead of the Afrobasket Championship in Abidjan, the Nigeria Basketball Federation(NBBF) is confident that Nigeria will emerge as winners of the tournament.
Nigeria has been seeded as one of the top teams for the tournament, with the President of the NBBF,Tijani Umar, stating that they will follow up their progress from the London 2012 Olympics.
“We never stopped working on that team right after the 2012 Olympics; we have been constantly in touch with the players,” Umar told the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN)
“The hard work showed when we took the national team including new players to China for the Stankovic Cup where, in spite of all the challenges, we were able to finish third.”
“The team have moved the camping site to Orlando, and I can tell you that of all the players that were in China, only five of them could make it to Florida. Seven have fallen by the way side.”
“This is to tell you that we have better skills at that level because the competition is getting keener.”
“This time, we are determined to bring the cup to Nigeria to show what we have been doing to Nigerians and to the government.”
The Afrobasket Championship will commence from August 20-31 in Abidjan, and the top three teams will get to represent the continent at the World Championship in Spain.
