The Nigerian Army has dismissed accusations against it over claims of unpaid operational and peace-keeping allowances by some soldiers fighting insurgents on Operation Lafiya Dole in the North East.
When DailyTrust asked to respond over the allegations of unpaid allowances and clarify the casualty figures at the recent attack on soldiers at Kareto in Borno State, Army spokesman Colonel Sani Usman said the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai had changed the previous method of paying soldiers operational allowance at their unit level because of inconsistencies in the actual number of soldiers at battalion and units.

He added that the soldiers were made to forward their bank account numbers for direct payment from army headquarters, but that some of the soldiers failed to give proper account numbers and corresponding telephone numbers for their accounts and when payments were made the transactions would fail.
Usman advised the soldiers who have not received their allowances to be patient while the administrative issues are being sorted out, as the funds have already been made available. He also explained that the Defence Headquarters had already paid the counterpart funding for the payment of allowances of soldiers who were on peace keeping mission to Guinea Bissau, but that the ECOWAS is to provide the remaining fund to enable the payment of the allowances to the soldiers.
