Notice Buhari's jabs at Trump at the UN meeting? by Nelson, Oluwabukola Michael

The #UNspeech is an opportunity for each nation's leader to boast about their own advancements, draw attention away from internal issues, and focus attention on the problems in other nations. Better than Donald Trump, Mohammadu Buhari played that game like a pro.

Buhari diplomatically jabbed at Donald Trump by displaying favor for the Iran Nuclear Deal and by citing the importance of the Climate Change Agreement. Two major topics on which Trump faces heavy criticism both from Obama, the Democrats and many nations, who were also part of those deals. Buhari even rubbed it in Trump's face by calling out the US's dirty past on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Buhari drew attention to Nigeria's leading role in restoring democracy in the Gambia and Cote D'Ivoire using the African ECOWAS machine. And just as Trump avoided to mention the burning issues of violent racism and white supremacist clashes that continue to rock the United States, Buhari went silent on the burning IPOB issue back home. This is Buhari stating "Nigeria does not need lectures from those who have their own issues to deal with."

Although such fervor in Buhari's tone and the thoughtfulness in his UN speech was missing in his August 21 speech to Nigerians after having abandoned the country for more than 100 days, I think for the purpose of the #UNSpeech "game", Buhari held up respect for Nigeria and Africa.
