A year ago, the South African police had opened fire on a group of striking miners during what was acclaimed to be a peaceful protest; 34 miners were killed.

The miners had been demanding for better wages and improved living conditions.

The owner of the South African mine where 34 striking workers were shot dead by police a year ago has apologised to relatives.

"We will never replace your loved ones and I say we are truly sorry for that," Lonmin mining company boss Ben Magara said.

At the ceremony marking one year since the incident, Mr Magara, head of the world's third largest platinum producer, said:

"It should not have to take the loss of so many lives for us as a company, as employees, as a community and as a nation to learn that this should have never happened and that it should never happen again."

"Each day we feel the effects of this tragedy," he added.

The miners’ families are yet to get justice for the loss of their loved ones.
