Metro Oops: Nigeria May Have Negotiated Boko Haram Ceasefire With the Wrong Guy

Last week, Nigeria gallantly announced that it had struck a ceasefire with the Boko Haram terrorist group, a deal which, it promises, would see the release of the over 200 Chibok girls which have been abducted over six months ago.

The Nigerian government says it struck the deal in Chad on Friday with a Boko Haram representative based in Saudi Arabia known as Danladi Ahmadu. This is where it gets interesting.

The name has pricked a lot of ears, especially those people who have been in regular contact with the sect during past negotiations.

“I have failed to find anyone who has ever heard of him,” a BBC Nigeria correspondent wrote earlier.

Even Sahara Reporters editors have said, “we've tried verifying the authenticity of the person from sources traditionally close to Boko Haram militants and we are getting negative feedback."

A Nigerian journalist, called Ahmad Salkida considered by many to be closed to the Boko Haram leaders, has said he doesn't believe Danladi Ahmadu is part of the Boko Haram leadership, or that he even speaks for the group. Salkida wrote on Twitter: “I challenge Danladi Ahmadu to an open debate if he has d [sic] interest of Nigeria at heart. Who is he?"

However, Mike Omeri, spokesperson for Nigeria on Boko Haram, told WorldPost that the government is very confident that it is discussing with the right person.

“These talks did not just happen one sunny morning ... They approached the president of Chad, and if he wasn’t confident [of Ahmadu’s identity] he wouldn’t have connected him with the president of Nigeria,” Omeri said. "The fact that this contact comes from Nigeria’s neighbor gives us confidence."
