Africa’s biggest party, Nigeria’s ruling Peoples Democratic Party has officially split into two major factions.

PM news reported that eight governors and former vice-president, Atiku Abubakar, walked out of the party’s convention ground in Abuja.

The Governors who are part of the “new” PDP are Chibuike Amaechi (Rivers, )Aliyu Wammako(Sokoto), Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Musa Kwankawanso (Kano), Muritala Nyako (Adamawa), Abdulfathi Ahmed (Kwara) and Babangida Aliyu (Niger).

The new PDP held their first meeting at the Yar’Adua conference centre where they addressed a press conference.

An excerpt from the new PDP's press confrence reads, “Given the foregoing, it is very clear that the Bamanga Tukur leadership cannot guarantee for our millions of party members democracy anchored on free choice and the rule of law. We have therefore taken it upon ourselves to rescue the party from their dictatorial leadership.”
Abubakar Baraje, from Kwara state emerged the chairman of the new PDP, Dr. Sam Jaja emerged Deputy Chairman, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, former governor of Osun State emerged secretary and Binta Kaoje emerged as woman leader.

At the other PDP convention, President Goodluck Jonathan promised that the party will continue to provide good governance for Nigeria, adding that the party is unshakeable by any opposition party.
