Protesting electricity sector workers yesterday disrupted activities at the head offices of the Benin and Ibadan distribution companies over allegations of unfulfilled agreements, including payments of benefits, retrenchment of workers and collection of fixed charges without supplying power.
Protests were also staged in Akure and Ado-Ekiti in an apparent coordinated action by labour unions, ahead of the May Day celebrations to compel the new owners of the privatised DISCOs to fulfil certain obligations, which have been subject of dispute and subsequent negotiations in recent weeks.
The situation was tense in Ibadan as commercial activities were paralysed at the headquarters of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, IBEDC, also known as Capital Building.
