The Nigerian Police on Monday in Abuja inaugurated a two-year strategic plan to contain the spread of HIV and AIDS among its personnel.

The strategic plan is to reportedly run from 2014 to 2016 and would be executed by the Police Action Committee on AIDS (PACA).

The Inspector-General of Police, (IGP) Mohammed Abubakar said the plan would guide the police in responding to the pandemic in line with the National Strategic Plan.

Commenting, Mr Ndudi Elumelu, the Chairman, House of Representative Committee on Health, commended the police for developing the plan, and assured of the support of the National Assembly.

Elumelu noted the hazards police personnel go through in the course of their duties, and urged the IGP to institute "two or three days compassionate leave to enable itinerant policemen meet their spouses''.

Elumelu said that the policy would promote fidelity among officers and their spouses, thereby reducing promiscuity and its attendant consequences.

He said the National Assembly was working on a Bill to protect the rights and dignity of people living with the disease, adding that the bill had passed Second reading.
