Col. Ahmed al-Barghathi, a senior military police commander was on Friday killed by unidentified gunmen in the Libyan city of Benghazi, reports Libya's official news agency, LANA.
He was the director of military police in the Libyan army, LANA added.
According to CNN, Libya has been beset with violence since the ouster of its ruler, Moammar Gadhafi in 2011.
Libyan intelligence services have warned that the country is becoming a haven for al Qaeda to regroup and regenerate itself.
Armed militias have roamed the country largely unchecked since Gadhafi's ouster.
Numerous weapons left over after his downfall are providing divergent groups to form their own militias, government officials said.
