The FIDEI Polytechnic Gboko in Benue State on Wednesday was shut down indefinitely following the killing of two policemen and two students during a bloody protest.

According to a report from Punch, trouble started when final year students were barred from writing their exams because they owed tuition fees.

The students reportedly staged a peaceful protest, and were attacked by a group of thugs known as ‘SHAWA,’ with the aim to dislodge them. Things went southwards quickly, and some policemen who intervened starting shooting teargas and bullets sporadically, it's said.

“In the process, a student was hit on the chest and died instantly, while another died in the hospital," a witness said.

Angered by this, the students allegedly regrouped and embarked on massive destruction of the school’s property.

The institution’s authority subsequently cancelled the examination.
