The INEC Spokesman, Mr Kayode Idowu on Thursday in an interview with newsmen in Abuja has stated that the commission was backed by law to receive money from political parties before they could obtain certified electoral documents.

According to him, there is a provision in the electoral laws that justified the payment of such money before political parties could obtain certified electoral documents.

The INEC Office in Anambra is demanding N2.2 million from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in order to make certified true copies of electoral documents available to it.

The APC and other parties are asking for the documents, following an order by the Election Petition Tribunal in Awka which requested the parties to produce electoral documents before filing their petitions.

Idowu stressed that it would cost the commission a lot of money to make photocopies of the electoral documents before making them available to the political parties.

He said that the fees would go into the coffers of the Federal Government and not the account of the commission.

“It is not only the APC that has been asked to pay that money. The All Grand Progressives Alliance (APGA) is also applying for the same documents.

“These parties are asking for certified true copies of the voter register, result sheets from all the polling units to the collation centres and the ballot papers,’’ Idowu said
