President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan has expressed his displeasure with Sahara Reporters for reporting that his health problems may have been linked to binge-drinking on his 56th birthday.

The president said this through Reuben Abati, his Special Adviser on Media and publicity. He was quoted as describing the Sahara Report story as ““utterly irresponsible, deplorable, highly unprofessional and unethical antics of certain fringe elements operating in the nebulous sphere of cyberspace who persist in seizing every opportunity to unjustifiably malign and impugn the character and integrity of the elected leader of their country.”

He said it was deplorable that while the presidency had informed the public (deeming it necessary to let the public know about the health status of their president) that he had had to go for a precautionary medical check-up in London, Sahara Reporters and other reckless and “unpatriotic internet-based” media agencies went ahead “with their entirely fictional, malicious, hate-driven and scurrilous distortion of the facts.”

Reuben Abati, speaking for the president, said that the president had spent his birthday in the privacy of his hotel room and that the president was not used to celebrating his birthday. He reiterated that there had been no drinking spree.

“As unregulated as they are, SaharaReporters and their ilk are not beyond the bounds of legal action for libel and willful defamation of the character and reputation of a President who has courageously stepped forward to serve his country...They know very well that they can never substantiate or prove the constant false allegations and innuendoes they publish for the sole purpose of negatively portraying President Jonathan and his administration….Their incessant claim of a bibulous President is pure fiction and blackmail, and the product of malicious imagination. We warn that our forbearance of their disrespectful caricaturing of the President is not limitless,” excerpts from the president’s statement read.

Sahara Reporters, however, has refused to swallow its words and retract its original report. Sahara Reports has said it will stand by its account of the London events in the past few days “despite Mr. Jonathan’s threats and deployment of scare tactics.”
