The South African police have used rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannon on anti-immigrant protesters in the capital, Pretoria in a bid to disperse them.

According to the BBC, a low-flying police helicopter was also deployed amid a stand-off between local protesters and foreigners, with both groups reportedly armed with sticks, bricks and knives.

Many unemployed South Africans accuse foreigners of taking their jobs. Recently, homes and businesses of Nigerians in the country were attacked and looted although no lives were lost.

President Jacob Zuma had called for calm ahead of the anti-immigrant march.
