Sunday, the 4th of August witnessed the violent protests of Okada riders in Karu, Abuja over the alleged treatment of a colleague by a female military officer, who allegedly forced the unfortunate okada rider to drink water from the gutter over a disagreement between them.

The Okada rider then mobilised his colleagues who
stormed the area and took several church goers hostage in the process.

The protesters showed their displeasure by blocking the road and attacking other church goers, damaging vehicles and causing tension in the area. Policemen and soldiers dispersed the protesters by shooting gunshots in the air.

An eyewitness said that the protest took a religious turn when the protested started chanting, “Allahu Akbar,” and began to harass Christians returning from church. And even in the midst of the unrest, some policemen at a nearby filling station didn’t bother to intervene to take order over the lawlessness of the okada riders.
