The internet services company, Rakuten Inc has purchased the messaging and VoIP Company Viber for $900 million. This move is one of a series of buys by Rakuten in an explosive bid to play in the digital content space in addition to buying products like Kobo, Wuaki.tv and Viki.

CEO and founder of Viber, Talmon Marco said “This combination presents an amazing opportunity for Viber to enhance our rapid user growth in both existing and new markets. Sharing similar aspirations with Rakuten, our vision is to be the world’s No.1 communications platform and our combination with Rakuten is an important step in that direction.”

It is expected that Viber’s user base of over 300 million users will help Rakuten achieve its purpose in shifting focus from the traditional content to mobile. Viber will come in handy when Rakuten begins penetrating new markets with a new package offering digital content in tandem with its ecommerce and financial services prowess.

Viber’s fun approach to messaging and VoIP blends with Rakuten’s “Shopping is Entertainment” philosophy.

Viber (the firm) says that the application has had significant growth, reaching 300 million registered users in 2013 with a 120% growth rate.
