The Radio, Television, Theatre, and Arts Workers Union of Nigeria (RATTAWU) on Wednesday lauded the Federal Government for rejecting a merger of NTA, FRCN, and VON.

This is contained in a statement issued by the National President of the union, Dr Yemisi Bamgbose in Abuja.

The union said that the Federal Government should be commended for analysing the Oransaye’s panel recommendation thoroughly before taking a decision.

It said that the union had, from the beginning, advised the government to take extra caution in upholding recommendations that would be detrimental to the information organ of the country.

The union also urged the government not to succumb to the clamour of some money bags using privatisation as a policy to lure the government into selling its information machinery in the name of privatisation.

"All over world, public broadcasting is funded by the government while private investors are given chances to own licences. There is nowhere in the world that the entire broadcasting sector is totally handed over to the private sector.

It also called on the government to implement the agreement reached with the union over its demands.

It said the union would not hesitate to embark on its planned strike if the Federal Government failed to implement the agreement.
