One of the most prestigious international scholarships in the world, Rhodes Scholarship, has been extended to Nigerian students.

The Rhodes Scholarship, named for the British mining magnate and South African politician Cecil John Rhodes, is an international postgraduate award for non-British students to study at the University of Oxford.

The Rhodes Trust on Wednesday announced the largest expansion of the Rhodes scholarship program in its 113-year history, to students from Ghana, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Malaysia, Nigeria, the Palestinian territories, Syria and the United Arab Emirates.

“Our goal is to be completely a global scholarship,” Charles Conn, the warden of Rhodes House and the chief executive of the Rhodes Trust, told New York Times. “There’s never been an increase like this before.”

The number of scholarships awarded each year will now rise to 95 from 83, an increase which sees four new scholarships included for Chinese students. Also, the number of Rhodes scholars studying at Oxford at any time will rise to about 250, from around 220.
